Senior Experienced Environmental Scientist-HAZ, Mississauga

ECOH has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Environmental Technologist / Senior Environmental Scientist / Experienced Environmental Scientist to join our growing Hazardous Materials and OHS teams, Mississauga. This position performs field site investigations and collects, inputs, analyzes and organizes data to assist senior staff in report preparation. The Senior Environmental Scientist also performs field monitoring duties, interacts with third party and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with contract, federal, provincial and municipal statutes and guidelines. The Senior Environmental Technologist / Senior Environmental Scientist has gained the appropriate field experience and training, to guide and mentor Environmental Scientists.  He/she has the responsibility of training Scientists in the field (sampling, data collection/field notes, process, guidelines, equipment maintenance, lab activities, reporting, etc.).

Here is what you will be doing:

Training & Supervision of Environmental Technologists / Environmental Scientists:

  • Providing training to field staff according to ECOH standards and techniques.
  • Providing guidance and support to field staff in collaboration with Project Managers.
  • Serving as the link between field staff and Project Managers to identify and close training gaps.
  • Providing consistent constructive and meaningful feedback to Environmental Technologists / Environmental Scientists.
  • Communicating with Projects Managers to provide information related to field staff (progression, issues, developments).
  • Providing instructions to Environmental Technologists / Environmental Scientists in consultation with Project Managers.
  • Providing technical assistance, mentoring and training to Environmental Technologists / Environmental Scientists by sharing experiences and expertise.
  • Completing the orientation process (as identified by the program), for new Environmental Technologists / Environmental Scientists.

Quality Control, Policies & Procedures:

  • Reviewing the work of others and assisting them in identifying and correcting errors.
  • Participating in all quality control initiatives including following related procedures.
  • Providing suggestions to Management to continually improve work quality.
  • Compliance with Corporate Policies and Procedures ensuring these are followed at all times.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate submission of internal reporting documents (time sheets, expense reports, etc.).

Marketing Activities:

  • Participating in various marketing activities, including providing assistance with proposal preparation, obtaining quotes from sub-contractors and laboratories.
  • Acting as a professional representative of ECOH on site.
  • Ensuring corporate resume is up to date, for inclusion in proposals as necessary.
  • Sharing prospective project opportunities with senior staff members and participating in follow up efforts.
  • Building business relationships with existing clients and prospective clients.

On-site Inspection During the Removal of Hazardous Materials and Demolition:

  • Scheduling and attending inspections and meetings with clients/contractors as required.
  • Entering, working in, and exiting hazardous environments, including asbestos removal and other hazardous materials abatement.
  • Ensuring the well-being and safety of workers and building occupants relative to work for which ECOH is responsible.
  • Preparing hand-written (or typed) site inspection reports in a neat and legible manner.
  • Representing ECOH in a professional & courteous manner.

Sampling and Analysis of Samples:

  • Transporting sampling and analytical equipment to project sites and laboratories.
  • Calibrating and maintaining environmental equipment and analytical equipment.
  • Collecting samples and preparing samples for analysis.
  • Analyzing air samples using an optical microscope (i.e. Phase Contrast Microscopy).

Performing Hazardous Building Materials Assessments:

  • Scheduling and attending inspections and meetings with clients/contractors as required.
  • Perform hazardous material assessments on all types of building envelopes and structures.
  • Identifying and sampling of suspect hazardous building materials.
  • Detailing field work in notes, drawings or data sheets as appropriate in a clear and concise manner.

Preparing Reports Detailing the Findings & Making Recommendations:

  • Preparing written reports of findings, summarizing, collating and interpreting the result of field investigations and analytical data.
  • Reviewing reports, project drawings, and historical site documentation.
  • Analyzing data and making recommendations for client compliance with applicable regulations, guidelines, client policies and industry best practices.
  • Preparing drawings as required (preferably using AutoCAD) when necessary to show the results of field investigations.

Here are the job requirements: 

  • A University degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Earth Sciences, Geology or Geological Sciences is preferred.
  • 1 to 3 years of technical and industry experience preferred.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment, including (if required) respiratory protection, specialized clothing, work boots, hard hats hearing protection, fall arrest, etc.
  • Ability to lift boxes, equipment and/or coolers not exceeding 20kg.
  • Ability to organize activities and accomplish tasks in assigned time frames.
  • Detailed oriented with respect to data collection and recording skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with project managers, clients and fellow staff; demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to travel out of the city or province for extended periods (i.e. several days to weeks at a time).
  • Must demonstrate strong initiative and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to work alone and/or in remote locations as required.
  • Valid driver’s license and adequate insurance must be maintained at all times.
  • General to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Adobe, PowerPoint, Outlook).
