Who is Chris Nielsen?

Chris Nielsen, Vice President at ECOH, is the friendly face behind decades of experience in environmental consulting and occupational health. With a career spanning over 35 years, he’s seen it all – from navigating asbestos-filled basements to ensuring the safety of bustling construction sites. And through it all, he’s remained committed to delivering top-notch solutions that exceed client expectations. But his journey into this field wasn’t exactly planned. It began, surprisingly, with a job interview at a pub.

In 1988, Chris answered an ad for an Asbestos Inspector and found himself at the Duke of Gloucester pub on Yonge Street in Toronto, being interviewed by one of the first asbestos consultants in Canada. “I ended up in this career without any intention, let’s just say it was a happy accident.” That initial role sparked a passion for the emerging field of asbestos consulting, which evolved to include environmental site assessments, fueled by his background in chemistry, soil science, water ecology, and a genuine love for the outdoors.

Building a Legacy of Expertise

Chris holds a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences & Fisheries and Wildlife Management from Lake Superior State University and later earned a Certificate in Environmental Management from Ryerson Polytechnic University, providing him with a solid foundation for his career. As his experience grew, Chris quickly became a leader in the field. His expertise wasn’t limited to asbestos, but expanded to encompass other hazardous materials, air quality, occupational hygiene, and health & safety. “In those days, working long hours wasn’t unusual,” he recalls. “I amassed 15-20 years of experience in my first ten years on the job.” This dedication culminated in the early 2000s when Chris was asked to project manage two of the largest asbestos assessment projects in Canada, encompassing over 1,750 buildings across Ontario.

“It was a challenging undertaking, but we were able to develop a sophisticated system of hand-held computer-based data collection and automated reporting,” Chris explains. This innovative system streamlined the assessment process and solidified his reputation as a pioneer in the field. “The successful delivery of those projects was the culmination of years of experience and what I consider to be the greatest achievement in my career.”

Committed to staying at the forefront of the industry, Chris has also been an active member of the professional community. When the Professional Geoscientists Act came into force in 2000, he applied and was accepted as a member, expanding his knowledge through networking with peers. He’s dedicated to giving back, mentoring Geoscientists in Training as part of PGO’s formal mentorship program, and served as the president for a two year term, and currently as Chair of the Science Advisory Committee for the conservation organization Muskies Canada Sport Fishing & Research Inc.

A Partner You Can Trust

Chris’ leadership extends to his management role within ECOH, where he focuses on fostering a culture of innovation and mentorship. Having touched nearly all aspects of environmental consulting, he shifted his focus to people leadership, inspiring the next generation of consultants.

His advice to those starting out in the field is simple: “Like most things in life, you get out of your career what you put in. Investing in yourself is the foundation of success.”

For clients, Chris emphasizes the importance of early communication and collaboration. “Don’t be afraid to ask ‘what should we do?’ or ‘how can we get there?’”

With decades of experience, a commitment to innovation, and a passion for mentoring, Chris Nielsen and the team at ECOH are ready to guide you through any environmental or occupational health challenge.
