World Environment Day 2025:
Beating Plastic Pollution

| June 2025

June 5th marks World Environment Day, a day that encourages collective action against plastic pollution, aspiring towards protection and restoration to our environment worldwide. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), this year’s World Environment Day will take place exactly two months before key negotiations occur between countries on a global pact directed at eliminating plastic pollution. It is observed in more than 100 countries worldwide, serving as the premier international forum for environmental awareness and outreach efforts [1].

The History of World Environment Day

Five decades ago, the world came together at the Stockholm first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972, marking a pivotal moment in humanity’s recognition of its shared responsibility to protect the planet. This historic gathering gave birth to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The conference’s rallying cry, ‘Only One Earth’, still resonates today, 50 years later, underscoring the enduring truth that our world is indeed one fragile entity that demands our collective care. [2]

Understanding the Devastating Impact of Plastic

According to National Geographic, production of plastic has increased exponentially, from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 448 million tons by 2015 and expected to double by 2050. This results in approximately 8 million metric tons of plastic waste entering our oceans each year – a staggering amount equivalent to dumping 5 overflowing garbage bags along every foot of global coastlines [3]. The invasive issue of plastic waste poses significant threats to biodiversity and ecosystem health. Entanglements of wildlife in discarded plastics, coupled with widespread contamination of waterways by microplastics, and not to mention pollution, deforestation and more have far-reaching implications that impact us all.

Here at ECOH, we understand that plastic pollution isn’t just an environmental issue, it’s a human health issue. Microplastics are now found in our drinking water, our food chain, and even in the air we breathe. Our team routinely assesses potential environmental impacts, and increasingly, that includes evaluating the risks associated with plastic contamination and its potential effects on communities.

Why Take Part in the Fight Against Pollution?

Time is of the essence: nature is in crisis, and humanity must act swiftly to prevent irreparable damage. To stay within the 1.5°C climate threshold, we have just a decade to halve our greenhouse gas emissions [4]. The need for immediate action has never been more pressing. By joining the fight against pollution, climate change, and other environmental threats, we can create a better future for ourselves, our children, and the planet as a whole.

Inspiring Solutions: Young Innovators Leading the Way

It’s encouraging to see individuals taking initiative to tackle plastic pollution. For example, young entrepreneur Boyan Slat, founder of The Ocean Cleanup, aims to remove 90% of floating ocean plastic—like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—by 2040 through scalable cleanup systems. Closer to home, PortsToronto’s Trash Trapping Program and the University of Toronto Trash Team deployed Seabins and WasteShark aquadrones (nicknamed Ebb and Flow) in Toronto Harbour, diverting over 600 kg of debris—and more than 100,000 small plastic pieces—in 2024 alone. And in Milton, Ontario, high-schoolers Ritvik Manicka and Suraj Subrahmanyan tracked GPS-equipped water bottles down local rivers, pinpointing “hot spots” where plastics accumulate so municipalities can target cleanups before trash reaches the Great Lakes. read more: thenarwhal.ca, greatlakesnow.org.

How Can You Make a Difference?

Plastic pollution isn’t just an “out there” problem—it begins with the packaging in your kitchen, the straw in your drink, and the bag you grab on the go. This World Environment Day’s focus on plastic waste reduction reminds us that every choice we make—from the products we buy to the habits we form—adds up. By adopting a few simple swaps and spreading the word, we can turn the tide on plastic pollution and protect our rivers, lakes and oceans for good.

On World Environment Day (and every day), we can all chip in to curb plastic pollution:

  • Refuse & Replace: Say “no thanks” to single-use plastics—skip disposable straws, cutlery and bags. Invest in a sturdy reusable water bottle, coffee cup and tote that you actually want to show off.
  • Buy Smart: Choose products with minimal or plastic-free packaging. Look for loose produce, shampoo bars instead of bottled shampoo, and bulk-buy options to cut down on needless wrappers.
  • Swap & Refill: Carry a refillable hand-soap pump and travel-size containers. Support shops that offer refills on cleaning supplies, personal care items and even olive oil—every refill avoids a new plastic jug.
  • Clean & Campaign: Join a local river- or beach-cleanup (grab some gloves and a bucket) and share your haul on social media to inspire friends. Even picking up six pieces of plastic on your morning walk prevents them from drifting into rivers and oceans.
  • Advocate & Educate: Write to your city council or favourite brands asking for better plastic-reduction policies—think bans on foam takeout containers or incentives for plastic-free packaging. And don’t be shy: chatting with neighbours, family and co-workers about simple swaps is how big change happens.

Each small swap keeps more plastic out of our waterways—and yes, ditching that plastic straw really does make a difference!
